Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Manager Radiology, the Ultrasound Technologist performs a variety of diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients of all ages and assumes responsibility for accuracy under the supervision and guidance of the Radiologist. In addition, the Ultrasound Technologist shall work effectively with patients and assist clinic personnel in other areas of the Radiology Department as needed. Essential Functions: • Performs diagnostic procedures as required and in an independent manner to receive the highest level of film quality with minimal supervision. (15%)• Locates patients in Synapse, accessing the power jacket, properly scanning necessary paperwork into appropriate folders (e.g. r/x orders, worksheets.) (15%)• Responsible for the completion of all procedures scheduled during the shift while maintaining quality of work performed; completion of all “stat” and add-on cases as necessary. (10%)• Verifies patient identification, confirms written order prior to exam and explains procedure to patient prior to beginning, including answering questions and calming any concerns to ensure their comfort during the procedure. (10%)• Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting room and diagnostic probes after each procedure while adhering to OSHA guidelines and Universal precautions. Maintains accurate updated log book for disinfecting and sterilizing equipment probes. (10%)• Reviews physician prescription to determine appropriate procedure request; reviews patient’s condition and any special instructions. Relays all pertinent history and instructions to Radiologist as needed. (10%)• Demonstrates competence in all areas of ultrasound positioning, procedure preparation and technical factors, skilled in operation of ultrasound equipment, and selects and modifies technical factors as needed. (10%)• Registers and orders studies in Meditech, edit ITS orders, records procedures and locate reports as needed. Sustain the necessary skill set in Meditech to properly edit ITS orders, record procedures, print requisitions as needed and locate reports. (10%)• Maintains and orders supplies for the Ultrasound department. Ensures ultrasound room is fully stocked with supplies at all times, and is responsible for disposal of biohazard waste. (5%)• Maintain the knowledge and skill set on Synapse/Meditech downtime procedures, manually adding patient information, appropriate MM# and recording completed procedures as required. (5%)Additional Responsibilities: • Performs functions in other modalities within Scope of Practice guidelines.• Performs all other duties as assigned.Minimum Position Qualifications:Education: • High school diploma or GED required. • Certificate of completion from an accredited ultrasound program / college or equivalent combination of education and experience to achieve mandatory certification. Experience: Requires one (1) year of training in an acute or ambulatory care facility performing a variety of ultrasound examinations. License / Certification: • ARDMS or registry eligible.• Current BLS (CPR) certificationComputer Skills: Basic computer skills in a Windows operating environment including Word and an e-mail system.Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology to perform examinations proficiently and assist radiologists in diagnosing abnormalities. • Consistently demonstrates technical proficiency in producing scans with the ability to recognize anatomical structures. • Competent in performing all ultrasound examinations to age-appropriate protocols with special attention to abdomen, aorta, thyroid, testicle, breast, perinatal, kidneys, OB/GYN, carotid, and arterial segmental waveforms and pressures as they pertain to the above areas. • Competent in all areas of ultrasound positioning, procedure preparation and technical factors; skilled in operation of ultrasound equipment and select and modify technical factors as needed.• Ability to develop guidelines and standardized work protocols as needed. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for routine contact with employees, providers, radiologists, patients and their families.Preferred Position Qualifications: Education: A.S. degree in Radiological Technology highly desirable. Experience: Two (2) plus years’ experience preferred.License / Certification: ARDMS licensure with certification in Abdomen (AB), Breast (BR) Obstetrics Gynecology(OB-GYN), Pediatric Sonography (PS) and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) Computer Skills: EMR and IDX experience preferred. Other: Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills.
