This position may be located at any of our Fort Irwin Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation facilities.

  • Works under general supervision of the Outdoor Recreation Manager or Recreation Specialist as a Recreation Assistant.
  • Incumbent is responsible for group management. The safety of the participants must always be the number one priority.
  • Must be familiar with all programs offered by Outdoor Recreation, as well as be familiar with local area as the position requires providing information to customers.
  • Reports any problems to the Outdoor Recreation Manager or Recreation Specialist as soon as possible in order to maintain a high quality service to guests.
  • Instructs groups and individuals in a variety of outdoor recreation programs, such as but not limited to rafting, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, challenge course.
  • Uses a variety of teaching methods to effectively communicate to participants who have a wide range of abilities and backgrounds.

  • Meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
  • A six month probationary period may be required.
  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
  • Completed and signed DA Form 3433 is required prior to entrance on duty.
  • Subject to satisfactory completion of all required background checks of AR 215-3, must be successfully completed and maintained to include the initiation/completion of Child and Youth National Agency Check with Inquiries (CNACI) when required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED training certification.
  • A physical examination is required for this position.
  1. Must have knowledge of and experience in a wide variety of Outdoor Recreation pursuits.

Best Qualified Criteria: 1. Applicants pursuing a degree in Recreation Management, Outdoor Recreation, or a related field, and in the process of completing an internship or fieldwork program will be considered highly qualified. 2. Applicants that possess a certification in rock climbing, mountaineering, search and rescue, first responder, or wilderness first aid. MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF CERTIFICATION WITH APPLICATION.
