JOB SUMMARY: The Patient Safety Officer (PSO) will have primary oversight of the facility wide patient safety program. Promotes a culture of safety and coordinates the systematic implementation of an effective Patient Safety Program. This leadership role will direct others within the facility towards process improvement that will support the reduction of medical/health care errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. The PSO provides leadership for safety assessments, coordinates the activities of the patient safety committee, educates other practitioners on the system based causes for medical error, consults with management and staff, and communicates literature-based ideas regarding effective patient safety strategies to others within the organization.


Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in a health care related field preferred. Experience: A minimum of 5 years direct patient care experience in an acute care setting required.2-5 years leadership or project management experience required.

Training: Leadership skills, including decision-making and accountability. The ability to inspire others to believe in the culture of patient safety, effective communication with staff, peers, and leaders to coordinate implementation of patient safety-related practices. Information management skills including flowcharting, data analysis and report preparation. Knowledge of and experience with analytic tools such as root cause analysis, Pareto charts, Failure Mode Effect Analysis, and FOCUS_PDCA improvement models, knowledge of the accrediting and licensing regulations pertaining to patient safety and management skills to compete projects in a timely manner. Ability to work with a variety of disciplines and levels of staff across departments and the health system is required License / Certification: Must have current California license and/or certification in respective disciplinePatient Safety Certification to be obtained within 5 years
