Through the use of Social and Restorative Justice Principals, Five Keys provides traditionally underserved communities the opportunity to restart their education with a focus on the Five Keys: EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, RECOVERY, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY. History

Originally established by the SF Sheriff’s Department (2003) as the first charter school in the nation to operate inside of a county jail, today Five Keys is a nationally recognized education management (non-profit) corporation that operates accredited charter schools and programs for TAY youth and adults at 70 locations across California. Five Keys operates with the goal of restoring communities through education and other programs that respond to the students’ and community needs---which in turn creates safer communities.

Five Keys provides a range of educational programs and services including: high school diploma, career and technical education, digital literacy, ESL, cognitive behavioral, recovery programs, case management, correctional education consulting and college access to transitional aged youth and adults in six California counties.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement open-entry / open exit ISP courses in a variety of subjects (and, when requested, elective subjects) designed for adult students of all academic levels and backgrounds* Deliver classes in line with school schedules (currently two classes: each of 2½ hours in length daily but subject to change) that cover a range of competencies and topics encompassing 1st - 12th grade state and common core standards* Complete WPRs and other required paperwork, according to state and school standards for ISP* Differentiate and scaffold courses to meet the needs of beginning readers and writers, students with disabilities and older students experiencing challenges in school* Create and implement course outlines and lesson plans that align with students: life goals and backgrounds, including work-related and practical courses integrating technology, life skills and vocational contexts* Integrate the Five Keys and restorative justice principles into course content* Implement daily, effective lessons using a variety of teaching techniques and curriculum into lessons, including direct instruction, small group work, individual learning, multi-sensory, technology and project-based learning* Assist in the development, revisions and evaluation of the curriculum and instructional services* Evaluate students to monitor success and respond to evaluations with pro-active developments to curriculum* Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals; establish clear objectives for all instructional units, projects and lessons to communicate these goals and objectives to students* Set-up classroom prior to class starting time, ensuring proper number of seats, desks or tables as needed, utilizing school equipment, furniture and resources; sharing with other teachers as needed* Strive to meet the standards set out in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession, and assist in establishing and maintaining an effective, and learning climate in the school* Interpret and implement all Board policies, administrative regulations and negotiated agreements* Abide by and implement established organizational procedures, including those related to health, safety, discipline and conduct of students* Serve as liaison between the school and community (including custody staff), implementing and representing the policies and mission of the school* Provide direction to students and make independent judgments regarding curriculum, safety and discipline* Demonstrate commitment to restorative practices in discipline decisions, and follow restorative discipline steps in line with school procedures* Collaborate with school staff to practice Universal Design and meet the IEP goals of students* Work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, teachers, administration, custody staff and community* Maintain confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information* Communicate openly and respectfully with individuals of varied cultural and educational backgrounds* Provide substitute lesson plans and instructions, and make a concerted effort to find a substitute teacher when calling in sick or scheduling time off* Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated* Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student conduct in the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner* Encourage students to set and maintain appropriate standards of classroom behavior* Maintain accurate, complete and confidential records as required by law, administrative regulations and school policy* Attend staff meetings and serve on staff / school committees as required* Maintain satisfactory attendance, as defined in school policy and regulations* Abide by all policies and procedures as defined by Five Keys Charter School* Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:

This position typically requires:

  • Possession of a California Commission on Teaching Credentialing Single Subject or Multiple Subject Credential (or equivalent)* Previous teaching experience preferred PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Moderate to extensive degree of physical and emotional stamina* Ability to be in a classroom for 2 ½ -3 hours without a break* Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, and sitting* Frequent talking and hearing conversations* Occasional reaching with hands and arms* Occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds* Ability to follow oral directions in emergency situations* Travel to multiple sites required* Clear TB test results dated within 60 days of hire to be submitted within 10 days of hire required WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be willing and able to work in a correctional facility and travel throughout the area to community sites
